Some Interesting History about Birmingham:

Birmingham was founded in 1871 by consolidating three local farm towns into one big city that became quite the industrial powerhouse of the South.  This growth and reputation were fueled by the proximity of three major minerals required for steel production: iron ore, coal, and limestone.  Birmingham is notable for being the only place in the world where all three minerals are deposited close to each other in significant amounts.  This provided the raw ingredients to propel Birmingham to be called “The Pittsburgh of The South”.  Production of steel, and steel related products became the cornerstone for Birmingham’s early success.  As steel was built, the nation’s burgeoning rail system relied heavily on the steel industry, and as such, positioned Birmingham to be a natural distribution hub that continues today.
