COLUMBUS PALLETS
Founded in 1827 by the Assembly of Georgia as a trading town, Columbus became on overnight success because of the location having access to the Federal Road that led North that connected it to smaller market towns, and its location on the navigable portion of the Chattahoochee River that allowed the goods to flow South into the port city of New Orleans. From there, goods could be distributed world-wide.
The railroad system made its way to Columbus by the 1850’s, and alongside it, the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution that brought with it textile mills that shifted Columbus’s reliance on raw agricultural goods for export, to manufacturing finished goods for domestic and global consumption. By the time the 1860s arrived Columbus had become so dominant in the textile industry, it had earned the nickname “The Lowell of the South,” after the important textile town Lowell in Massachusetts.
Today, Columbus still has a strong manufacturing presence in the South, and the traditional proximity to trade routes make it an ideal place for businesses to locate their manufacturing base. Columbus is also known for Fort Benning that was originally established as a training camp and has become an integral part of the city’s identity.
